*Cough* *Cough*
I’m seriously considering not going in to work on Monday.
First off, US plays the Czech Republic in their first World Cup soccer match at 9 am. This game is, I think, the pivotal game for the US.
The winner here has a decent shot at going 2-1 in the group, assuming they get whooped by Italy and then can take care of a deceptively good Ghana in the final game of group play. It also makes it real tough on the loser, turning Ghana into a must-win and pretty much turning Italy into a must-at-least-tie.
If it ends in a draw, then the US may be screwed by the schedule:
-Next up for the US is Italy, by far the toughest opponent in the group. Assume the US loses there. If Italy has beaten Ghana, this is their chance to clinch the group at 2-0. They’ll be going at it full bore.
-Meanwhile the Czechs are working their tails off to beat Ghana. Let’s assume once again that they beat the scrappy Africans.
-Now, it’s the last day of group play. Italy’s already beaten the US and Ghana, are at 2-0, and have already clinched the group. They can just sit back and stay healthy not needing the 3rd win to advance. Meaning the Czechs at 1-0-1 can just hang back, play for another draw, and edge the US out of 2nd spot in the group, regardless of the US result vs. Ghana.
If all that holds up after a tie on Monday, then the final rankings would be (at best):
Italy – 2-0-1 – 7pts
Czech – 1-0-2 – 5pts
US – 1-1-1 – 4pts
Ghana – 0-3-0 – 0pts
So yeah, the US’s World Cup fates could all be decided by 11am on Monday. Of course, like I said, Ghana is deceptively good and could jump up and bite someone on the toukas. But if things hold to form….
Anyway, after noon, I could head to the doctor to have him give me a quick once over before…
The Team LA Store Clearance at Staples Center! Monday’s the first day and things’ll be discounted up to 50%! I may need more T-shirts and hats for the summer, and it’ll give me an excuse to head downtown and check out all the fun contruction across the street.
So, yeah… I think I feel the beginnings of an itch in my throat today.

Dude, don't concede anything to Italy. They ain't necessarily going 3-0 in this group. The US matches up with them pretty well, and they're going through scandal.
